Andrew Goodwin Theory 

Andrew Goodwin’s theory identifies six key features within music videos, they are the following 

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. 

 The genre of the song can often be recognized through the music video, the different characteristics that each video contains allow the audience to differentiate each genre. For example in R&B music videos it is common to have dancer however this is not a norm in a rock video. 

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.

Andrew Goodwin suggests that the relation ship between the lyrics and visuals can either be illustrative, amplifying and contradicting.

Illustrative- the music video use a variety of images and shots to illustrate the meaning of the lyrics, in other words the video tells the story behind the lyrics.

Amplifying- the shots used in the music video are to increase the meaning behind the lyrics and make a statement for example

Contradicting- this is when both the music video and the lyrics contradict each other for example the lyrics can be about happiness yet parts of the music video illustrates the opposite.

The relationship between the lyrics and visuals can be described as both contradictive and illustrative. The lyrics talk about a girl who is outgoing and very brave but also a cheater. At the beginning, the lyrics give us an idea of the ideal girl and throughout the rest it talks about the relationship with this girl. The video tells the story of her being a cheater; it links with the lyrics which seem to be giving the same idea. So the relationship between the lyrics and visuals can be seen as illustrative, however it’s also contradicting because the lyrics also talk about their ideal girl, “I’m looking every where got my senses all in check, for that someone who can take my breath away and got my back”. The location we see is a hotel and an Ariel shot of a city which looks similar to Las Vegas when the lyrics are said. It’s contradicting because what we see doesn’t match the lyrics.


There is a relationship between music and visuals.

This point is very similar to the second point, rather than comparing the video to the lyrics, your looking at whether the beat/sound contradicts, illustrates or amplifies the visuals/images that you see in the music video. The relationship compared here is not between the lyrics and visuals instead it’s the beats/sounds and visuals.

For example, the song tonight is quit upbeat sounds this is illustrated through the use of lighting and colours. Bright lighting and colours are used within the music video which help in illustrating the sound of the music, further more the bright lights amplifies the sound of the music video, just by seeing the bright colours the audience can get an idea that its an upbeat song. 

The voyeuristic use of the female body

The voyeuristic use of the female body is common in this video. In many R&B and Hip Hop videos it is common to see the female body being treated objectively. In this video the female character is treated as a sexual object and passed on to different guys. Although it is common in Hip Hop and R&B video to have dancers we don’t get much in this video except for tae yang but he is really seen as a sexual object in this video. 

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style). 

With in the music video we get lots of closeups of all the artists, this is to promote each artist and create a visual image of each artist. 

There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

in this music video there isnt any intertextual references however it can be related to movies that have city / night theme going on.
