Auteur Theory

Auteur means “Author” in French. The idea behind this theory is that a film director personal creative vision can be seen through the director’s film thus making him the author. However as simple as this may sound, the question to be asked is who is really considered as the Auteur. Auteur theory has influenced film criticism since the 1950s, as there is a lot of collaboration in film production the controversy caused by this theory was that who was considered the auteur. the director is responsible for the film. However, more than one person will work on a film, so what makes the director more worthy of Authorship than, say, the editor, camera operator or scriptwriter. However this does not mean every film director should be considered an “Auteur” of a particular film. To be considered an author, a director must have a variety of work which have ongoing themes, whether they occur intentionally or unintentionally.

Similarly this theory can be applied to music videos; the directors own visual significance should be seen throughout the music video. A famous music video director that I have chosen to look at is Joseph Kahn.

Conventions of electro/house

House music is a style of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago, Illinois, United States in the early 1980s. House is uptempo music for dancing.

The music videos for House music tend to have messages about dancing, love, sexuality, and drugs all underpined with repetitive arrangements and a steady bass drum beat.

you can also find alot of syncriniozed dancing with the genre. in alot of the music video you will see bright colours and female dancers dressed provactivly.

there tends to always be some sort of club or dance scene in alot of house/electro videos.

Music Genre Research

House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago, Illinois, United States in the early 1980s. It was initially popularized in mid-1980s discothèques catering to the African-American,Latino American, and gay communities; first in Chicago circa 1984, then in other locations such as New York City, New Jersey, Toronto, Montreal, London, Detroit, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Miami. It then reached Europe, and since the early to mid-1990s, it has been infused in mainstream pop and dance music worldwide.

Weekly update

This week we chose a song for our music video, the song we chose is vybz cartel pon de floor. We done quite a lot this week, we completed our audience research. We did our audience research in a way to help us understand more about editing a music video; we worked together in the editing room to make our research look the way it does. We also discussed ideas for our music videos and now have a better understanding of what we want.by next week i hope to have done my mood board done and have made contact with my artist.

Technical Analysis 2

Maroon 5 moves like jagger

Although the genre of the song is different from the song we have chosen, I have decided to analysis this song because the concept is simple and also it quite an upbeat song like ours, so in a way both genres share some similar characteristics.

Cinematography
The music video has 6 basic shots which are continually repeated through out the song, they use a long shot, medium shot, and extreme close up, low angle, close up over the shoulder shots. in the music video the camera is usually always in the same place cause the music video is made up of a lot of medium shots.

Mise en scene

The mise en scene for this video is quite 1980s, its very simple, they have a background of different flags which is where all the dancing takes place, it set in a studio like setting. The costumes chosen also match the concept of the video. Also the whole video has this old film look to it which compliments the mise en scene very well.

Editing

The editing of this music video cuts to the beat of the song, the pace goes with the song very well.
The concept of the whole video is simple, its just a very fun concept, for our music video we want to have a similar concept with the influence of other music videos such as geek in the pink by jason mraz. Both videos have different people dancing in front of the camera or doing something random in front of the camera basically they are just going with the flow of the music. Our concept is just not wholly based on moves like jagger but other videos and our own ideas.

Target Audience

after carrying out our audience research we have an understanding of who our target audience is
our Target audience are people aged 17-35
Vybz Kartel songs are targeted to a female and male audience

an example of the target audience is

this is saima is she is an example of someone who part of our target audience, saima loves to dance and party. she likes music that has a beat to it. she is 18 years old. she is one of our tareget audience

we are not just targeting people that love to part and dance we are also going to try and expand our audience to people outside our target audience.

Audience Research Evaluation

The audience research we carried out has helped us have more of an understanding of what the audiences expect to see in a house/electro music video.  One thing that many people suggested was dancer, which is one of the genre characteristics of house/electro, since the audience wants dancers in the video; it is some thing we should include in there as it appeals to them.  We also asked them about the favorite music videos, least favorite videos and favorite music genre. This is so that we can see what kind of music videos there enjoy and dislike by watching it, we asked about there favorite genre because we wanted to do research in to genre and look at those music videos and see if we can add those characteristic in to ours, we want our music video to appeal to a variety of audience, the age group we are aiming at are people aged 17-27+. Overall this piece of research has given us more of an idea of what to include and not to include in our video.

Weekly update

This week we've been looking at different songs that we could make a music video for, a song that we think would be a good song to make a music video for is Pon de floor by Vybz Kartel. we also started with our research and planning, i did my star analysis, auteur theory, analysis of album cover and Andrew Goodwin theory.

Andrew Goodwin Theory part 2

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.

The music video for word play does demonstrate genre characteristics, it falls under one of the rock sub genres. The genre rarely have any dancers in the music video, it often has band performance and tells a narrative just like the music video word play.

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.

The relationship between the lyrics and visuals can be described as illustrative and amplifying. The lyrics talk about the people who dislike him or his music and how he aint about to change it, it talks about how his just not a one hit wonder and if you don’t like his music then you can just **********. Lyrics such as “cause they need a new song, like a new religion, music for the television I can’t do the long division someone do the maths” are a good example of the meaning of the song.
The video starts with Jason Mraz, his band, and a wizard (who magically plays the guitar) all playing their instruments in a field. He is then seen sitting on fallen tree playing his guitar. While he is playing his guitar we see an old man walking by who cannot stand listening to the music he is playing. The old man then begins the process of stoning him. Throughout the video more and more people gather to continue stoning him. The wizard, who is playing the guitar, is actually Jason himself dressed as the wizard. The video then continues to show all of the previous shots. It ends with him extremely injured from being stoned and then fades to black. Both the lyrics and what we see are illustrative, the video tells the story of the lyrics. Also in some parts the relationship is amplifying for example.

In this part people are throwing rocks at him, the lyrics that you here are Mr. A-Z is all about the wordplay. Its amplifying because its trying to say u can throw whatever you want but Jason Mraz is sticking with the word play, sticking with his own style of music.

There is a relationship between music and visuals.

The relationship between the music and visuals are illustrative, what we here is the guitar and the drums, keyboard etc. In the music video we also see these instruments and many more, the beat of the of song is not slow but quite up beat, its illustrative because if you were just to watch the video without the music you would expect to hear the guitar and all the other instrument because we see them within the music video.

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

tthrough out the video we get lots of close up this is help the mraz creat his own visual style also towards the end we get more close up of his face to show all the bruises and cuts from people throwing stones at him

There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

It is common to have a voyeuristic treatment of the female body, however the genre of the music video doesn’t treat women objectively or in a sexual way, this tends to be more common among R&B and Hip Hop videos etc.

The music video does have a notion of looking however its not screen with screen, mirrors or telescope etc. It has the musician directly looking in to the camera in a lot of the shots; this is because the song is technically to word the audience.

There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

This music video does have intertextual references, it is influenced by the film the wizard of oz
